Never before had the world experienced a war such as World War I, and in Australian terms, this country had barely any experience of war apart from “virtual” State police and civilian wars against Aborigines, small State involvements in overseas wars, and minor roles in the wars in New Zealand, South Africa (the Second Boer War), the Boxer Rebellion and the war in Sudan.
