Falkland Island stamp collectors know that cancellations of early Falkland letters are very often directly linked to the regular shipping schedules. The well-known Kosmos Steam Shipping Company of Hamburg had the contract to carry mail between Britain and the Falkland Islands for 20 years from 1880 till the end of June 1900. Until the introduction of a regular air service in 1972, postal communication between the Falkland Islands and the outside world was never better than it was in the hands of the Kosmos line.
