Australia Post is releasing a stamp issue featuring the top five finalists from a national photography competition initiated by the Australia Day Council of New South Wales (ADCNSW). The Living Australian stamp issue includes five 60 cent stamps and will be available on 5 July 2011. In 2010 the ADCNSW with the support of Australia Post encouraged Australians to explore the theme of “Who We Are” as a nation, by showcasing how they live as Australians every day through the creative medium of photography.
The response was overwhelming with 3,350 images submitted in the categories of Community; Pride; Family and Mates; and Freedom. Photographic subjects ranged from the wide brown outback to our golden beaches and cosmopolitan cities. All entries, finalists and winners can be seen on the website www.AUSSIEVAULT.com.au
“Australia Post is delighted to be supporting the Living Australian Online Photography Competition by featuring the top five finalists in this stamp issue. Postage stamps are renowned worldwide for reflecting their country’s culture and this competition provided a unique way for Australians to showcase what Australia means to them,” said Australia Post Philatelic Manager, Michael Zsolt. The ADCNSW and Australia Post had the difficult task of short-listing the top 20 entries after which the nation was given the opportunity to decide which image truly represented the theme of Living Australian by voting for their favourite photograph.
“We were astounded by the thousands of wonderful photographs that showcased the best of Australia and the moments we all share. For the finalists, this is truly a money can’t buy opportunity having their “Living Australia” moment admired by fellow Australians across the nation and overseas – it doesn’t get much better than this!” said Angelos Frangopoulos, Chairman of the Australia Day Council of NSW. The overall winner was “Best Friends” by Ann Clarke of South Australia who received the honour of having her winning photograph on an Australia Post stamp. There was also a cash prize of $5,000 awarded by the ADCNSW to the overall winner.
The other four finalist’s photographs included in the Living Australian stamp issue are – “Embrace Friendship” by Jackie Hewett, New South Wales, “Cricket at the ‘GABBA’” by Katelyn Wall, Queensland, “Little Man’s Business” by Suzanne Wilson, New South Wales and “This Is So Relaxing!” by Amanda Morrison, Australian Capital Territory. The Living Australian stamp issue which incorporates the five photographs was designed by Simone Sakinofsky of the Australia Post Design Studio.
Included in this stamp issue are six sets of postcards, each with a different theme including Australian Sunsets, Sydney Australia, Coastal Australia, Native Australian Birds, Australian Wildlife and Outback Australia. Each set contains six postcards. The wonderful photographs featured on the postcards were selected across all competition entries.
The Living Australian stamp products also include a first day cover, stamp pack, set of five maxicards, self-adhesive booklet of 10 x 60c stamps and a self-adhesive roll of 200 x 60c stamps.
