While most of Australia’s armed forces sweated it out in the Pacific to protect our home shores, small numbers of Aussies played key roles in the war in Europe. Amongst them there was an elite group of fighter pilots, almost allof whom joined the British RAF. They fought in fighter planes like Hurricanes and Spitfires in desperate aerial battles over places like Dunquerque and later over London and many major British cities. Their job was to shoot down as many of Hitler’s bombers and fighters as they could as Hitler tried to crush the RAF by bombing its airfields, facilities, workshops and factories. Later, when this strategic bombing failed (because too many Nazi planes were lost), the Luftwaffe was used in “Blitz” raids against civilian targets. Goering believed that his bombers could break the spirit of the British. Into this maelstrom, vastly outnumbered by the enemy, flew Aussie pilots like Pat Hughes, DFC, an Australian fighter Ace. Sadly, he did not survive the war, but his memory and example lives on.
